EU- LAC Foundation: Former President of Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez will chair Bi-regional Foundation

The EU-LAC Foundation, with headquarters in Hamburg (Germany), was created by mandate of the Heads of State of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and the European Union (EU) at the Summit held in Madrid in 2010 and has been working as foundation with a transitional regime since 2011, subject to German law. The foundation aims to help strengthen the process of bi-regional association CELAC-EU promoting the participation and contributions of civil society and other stakeholders.
The foundation work is extensive: conducts seminars, workshops, studies, etc. This year, for example, in collaboration with the Ecuadorian government that took place in April, the First Youngsters Meeting CELAC-EU space which enabled young leaders from both regions discuss the problems that youngsters face in the fields of education and decent employment.
Ecuador is part of the Board of Governors, organism that meets twice a year at the level of Senior Officials to approve and monitor the work plan of the foundation, which includes activities involving civil society in both regions, determine the annual budget of the Foundation, choose their highest authorities every four years, among other functions.
In this framework, all countries of the CELAC and EU met on November 19 and proclaimed this election of former Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez, who, together with Paola Amadei, current EU ambassador in Jamaica replace the current authorities since January 2016. With the election of the new authorities it is expected to strengthen the work of the foundation, essential tool in strengthening the bi-regional strategic partnership. Former EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero and the Peruvian Ambassador Jorge Valdez, who served as President and CEO of the Foundation since 2011, concluded his mandate and received the appreciation of both regions for the outstanding work and significant results in the initial life stage of the EU-LAC Foundation.
