Spain presents the request for the Schengen visa exemption for Ecuadorian citizens to the European Union
Quito, January 29, 2018
The President of the Republic, Lenin Moreno, announced today that the Government of Spain presented to the European Union (EU) the request for Ecuadorian citizens to enter the Old Continent without the need to present the Schengen visa.
This action of the Spanish Executive comes after the request that Lenin Moreno made to President Mariano Rajoy during the visit that the head of the State made in December 2017 to Madrid with Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa.
This will allow Ecuadorian citizens to visit their families in 26 countries of the European Union, on trips of up to 90 days, without the need of requesting this visa. Only in Spain, it is estimated that 435,000 Ecuadorians citizens reside, while in Italy the figure is around 170,000.
During the official visit, the Ecuadorian President requested the Spanish leader to mediate to the EU, who recalled that hundreds of Ecuadorians, due to the visa requirement, could not see their relatives before dying.
“Allow Ecuadorians who want to come to visit their family and also those who want to return to Ecuador to see their father or mother,” said the head of the State in Madrid, who highlighted the paradox that “capital easily cross borders” while putting obstacles in the way of human beings. He also stressed that Ecuador is the first country that has declared that the goal must be Universal Citizenship.
The negotiation for the Schengen visa exception for Ecuador is being organized between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility and the European Commission and the Council of Europe. Also, the opinion of the European Parliament is necessary.
