INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE UNANIMOUSLY REJECTS PROVISIONAL MEASURES REQUESTED BY MEXICO AGAINST ECUADOR
Quito, May 23, 2024
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice, on May 23, 2024, unanimously rejecting the request for provisional measures presented by Mexico in the case relating to the Mexican Embassy in Quito (Mexico vs. Ecuador).
Mexico’s request sought an order from the Court regarding the protection of the Mexican Embassy in Quito and its property and archives.
The unanimous decision of the International Court of Justice to reject Mexico’s request confirms the unnecessary nature of the request. Mexico’s request was made without regard to Ecuador’s repeated assurances, since April 9, 2024 (before Mexico filed its claim with the court), that it would provide full protection and security to the premises, property, and archives of the Mexican Embassy, and that it would allow Mexico to remove all such properties from the premises and private residences of its diplomatic agents. Ecuador maintains this position.
Among other things, the Court recognized Ecuador’s good faith and made clear that the present circumstances do not present any risk to Mexico’s rights under the Vienna Convention.
Ecuador remains firm in its fight against corruption and impunity and its commitment to justice.
